Antje Budde

Associate Professor at FAS, Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies

A major focus in my work is playful, queer-feminist knowledge making and knowledge mobilization through participatory, interactive and transmedia performance and interdisciplinary collaborations between the arts, sciences and engineering. My background is in theatre sciences (Theaterwissenschaft), transmedia cultural communication and modern Chinese studies focussing on practices and cultures of innovation, alternative thinking, multilingual expression and social engagement. I have co-founded and led a number of performing art collectives and projects. I studied at Humboldt University Berlin (MA and PhD), took courses at Berlin’s Ernst Busch University of Theatre Arts and studied for three years at the Central Academy of Drama, Beijing. Since 2005 I’m a faculty member at U of T’s Centre for Drama, Theatre and. Performance Studies.

I’m the artistic research director of the Digital Dramaturgy Labsquared (DDL2). In this context I have worked on projects relevant to practices of sustainability like Btw Lf & Dth - interFACING disAPPAERANCE, Rattling the Curve - Paradoxical ECODATA Performances of A/I and Facial Recognitions of Humans and Trees, and Minding Niimi/ Imagination/Imaging to name a few.

Currently I’m collaborating with Taanteatro Companhia (Sao Paolo, Brazil) and the ArtSci Salon at the Fields Institute for Research in the Mathematical Sciences in Toronto to bring the Ecoperformance Film Festival (founded in 2021) to the University of Toronto in the Fall of 2026 and actively involve students, faculty, Toronto locals and artists across disciplines and cultural backgrounds.
